Hi all! My name is Cass, and I am a PhD student at NYU studying CS ed, in particular creative computing. I am in the process of designing a tangible programming language for physical computing that engages students in culturally-sustaining problem-solving, and I am looking for CS educators to participate in a research study about it.

If you are unfamiliar, a tangible programming language is a type of educational computer programming interface that uses physical objects to represent programming concepts. Concepts like sequencing, loops, and conditionals are represented by objects such as blocks, cards, or toys. These objects can be arranged in physical space to form structures that represent the logic and flow of a program and control a separate robot or game character.

In the study, we want to get to know the teaching practices of CS educators as well as how they compare their previous experiences with tangible/visual programming languages with a playtest of this new system. Each session will involve two educators who will collaborate on the activities and interviews planned. The study will involve a survey, a playtest, interviews, and a co-design session, lasting in total around 2 hours. Participants will be compensated with $150.

Please contact Cass Scheirer (cls663 @ nyu [dot] edu) with a non-DOE affiliated email address to participate. Over email we will arrange a session at our NYU space that fits your schedule.

    Thank you!
