  • 1.  March 9, 2023 Regional Meeting @ Qualcomm Summary

    I am here at the SD CSTA Regional Meeting at Qualcomm and wanted to share some info about what happened here tonight (March 9, 2023).

     

    It started with a visit to their Thinkabit lab which is undergoing a transformation (IT is upgrading some equipment tomorrow) but it looked like an incredible maker space. They support 22 labs throughout the country, including the Chula Vista Library that has programs for all 6th grade students in Chula Vista. They also have 8 free activities with videos available on their site: https://thinkabitlab.com/learning-center. It looks like it includes career videos as well.

     

    Qualcomm also organized a panel discussion that was absolutely fantastic. The stated goal was to help prepare the STEM workforce of tomorrow. It was led by Brianne Wada, one of our Qualcomm hosts. The panelist were Sara Burns from the San Diego Workforce Partnership, H Puentes - president and CEO of San Diego Squared, and  Vijay Shirsathe - VP of Engineering of Wireless and research Development at Qualcomm.

     

    Some of the highlight of the discussion were the skillsets they described that are desirable for

    STEM employees:

    • Programming skills are a given (first 4 are Vijay / Q)
    • Problem solving is the number one skill Qualcomm is looking for.
    • Smart and can get things done.
    • Energy and enthusiasm as well as curiosity you have about the tech
    • Diversity (from H) - there is a lot of data that actually says this makes an economic difference
    • Customer Service (form Sara) - that ability to get it done for the people you serve
    • Detail oriented
    • Business Acumen (from ChatGPT via Sara)
    • Leadership Management skills
