    CS Ed Week

CS Ed Week is next week!

This annual celebration is a nationwide call to action to inspire K–12 students to learn computer science, advocate for equity, and recognize the contributions of students, teachers, and partners in the field. This year's theme, "CS Powers AI Innovation," highlights how foundational computer science skills are essential for understanding and shaping the future of artificial intelligence.  As AI rapidly transforms our world, it's more important than ever to equip students with computational thinking and problem-solving skills so they can lead in AI development and create impactful solutions for the future.  So this year, to celebrate CS Ed Week, schools around the country will be doing an "Hour of AI" in place of an Hour of Code to help students and educators everywhere take their first steps in understanding and creating with AI.

Let us know how you're celebrating CS Ed Week! Share your resources, activities, photos, and stories with other Educators across Washington State!

I can start this off!  There are a few new activities from Microsoft for Hour of AI this year -

    Hour of AI activities
    MakeCode Arcade Bug Arena
    Grades 3-8
    Free, web-based
Students code their own AI Bug algorithms to compete against other AI bugs to cover the screen with paint
Activity: https://aka.ms/ba, and Educator Resources: https://aka.ms/ba-edu

    Minecraft Education First Night
    Grades 6-10
Requires Minecraft Education download/install, but available as a free demo world (no licenses required)
With AI mini-Agents, you'll plan, prototype, automate Minecraft tasks using code in Blocks or Python
    Get started at: https://aka.ms/hourofai

    Micro:bit CreateAI
    Grades 6-10
    Requires hardware
If you have micro:bits in the classroom, this is a great time to dip your toe in the AI waters with physical computing! Using the micro:bit CreateAI feature, you can train a machine learning model to recognize gestures and movement with the micro:bit.

Visual Studio Code for Education Slither Slam
    Grades 9-12
    Free, web-based, login required
In this activity, students will prompt an LLM to generate code for their own "SnakeBot" character to compete against other AI snakes in a game.
