Saw this news report on YouTube talking about how a job at Google, Microsoft, or Amazon isn't really a "dream job" anymore. You could probably include Apple in there as well. The report focuses on the recent layoffs in the tech industry and how recent college grads want to be part of a company that is more disruptive than the big three.
Personally, the only times I've applied to Microsoft were for teams that were trying something new. Usually surrounding open source or the new web technologies. But most of the people I was in contact within the early 2000's saw a job at Google or Microsoft more as a stepping stone. Either to forming their own company or becoming a director or CTO at a more "exciting" company.
