Description

Join us for a tour of the Harvard Forest Field Wireless Network (HFFW) facilitated by Katharine Hinkle, Manager of Youth Education. Get ideas for teaching the data strand of the MA Digital Literacy & Computer Science standards as we explore how working scientists use computer science to collect, analyze and share data.

Our tentative agenda includes:

  • A hike in the forest to see the sensor network in action, including climbing 90' into the canopy for views of the eddy flux and neon towers.
  • A demonstration of how to access real-time datasets you can use with your students, including weather station & stream gages and phenology webcams
  • An overview of the Harvard Forest Schoolyard Ecology program, an opportunity to engage your students in collecting authentic ecological field data in their own local schoolyards (no cost to participate!).

The tour includes a one-mile hike over mostly flat ground. Wear comfortable hiking clothes and pack a lunch. You must sign a waiver to participate in the 90' canopy tour; we will email the form to everyone who registers. Please reach out to the event organizer if you are interested but can't do the walk—we can shuttle folks out by van.

Note: Harvard Forest is located in the town of Petersham in central Massachusetts, NOT Cambridge.
