Host a tech industry speaker in your classroom!

Amazon and Microsoft employees will be volunteering at Seattle Public Schools and Bellevue School District during CS Ed Week.  If you are part of these districts, contact your district CS department to sign up to host a guest speaker.

Google volunteers will be matched through a national CSTA program.  Learn more and sign-up here https://www.csedweek.org/post/bring-a-google-volunteer-to-your-classroom

From the thread: Join the UW Allen School in celebrating CSEdWeek! 12/2-12/7

The Allen School CSEd week activities have been announced - please NOTE THE DATES - they are not the national CSEd week dates because that corresponds to our finals week.

    ------

Every December, the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering (Allen School) Celebrates National Computer Science Education Week*, which is an annual call to action to inspire students to learn computer science, advocate for equity, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners to the field.

*Note that our events are a week earlier than the National CS Ed Week.

We are inviting middle and high school students to join the Allen School in celebrating with us!

    • Virtual Events: December 2nd - 6th

      • Learn about computing, meet current Allen School students, and engage in computing activities via Zoom!

    • Open House: Saturday, December 7th, 1:30pm- 4:00pm

      • Join us on the UW - Seattle campus for an interactive Open House to explore and get inspired by the world of computer science.

Interested middle and high school students can visit our Allen School Computer Science Education Week page to view a full list of our events, learn more, and register. Please share the flyer with students and teachers in your community who would be interested!

Note that there is also an event specifically for teachers on 12/3 - to learn more about our UWHS offerings.

Thank you in advance for helping us spread the word about our events! Please feel free to reach out to outreach@cs.washington.edu with any questions.

    In community,

Fernanda on behalf of the Allen School Diversity & Access Team

One idea for future years is a Governor's proclamation of CSEd Week as some other states have done.   It seems pretty easy if you like writing Whereas...  clauses.   See https://governor.wa.gov/contacting-governor/requests-invites/request-ceremonial-proclamation-greeting-or-letter   One catch is that the request needs to be made 45 days prior so this makes this something for next year.

CSforALL Celebrates Diversity, Innovation, and Access in Computer Science Education During CSEdWeek 2024

Join CSfoALL for CSEdWeek 2024 as this year's celebration highlights the power of computer science to transform lives and communities, with a focus on increasing access, fostering diversity, and driving innovation.

    Monday, December 9, 2024:

Join SCRIPT Crew TN for a Summit focused on Tennessee's Computer Science Education (CSEdu) legislation. This event is tailored for Computer Science and STEM teachers, school administrators, and district leaders committed to enhancing CS education. Engage in vital discussions with stakeholders to share your vision, review progress, and outline future goals. You will use the Strategic CSforALL Resource and Implementation Planning Tool (SCRIPT) to craft customized implementation plans for your district.

    Tuesday, December 10, 2024:

Boost student engagement through the core concepts of computational thinking: decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking.

In this session, you'll learn how to integrate these skills into your teaching, making complex concepts more accessible and engaging for students. Presenters including CSforALL's SCRIPT Program Lead Joe Meléndez will share examples of activities as well as strategies to create your own to encourage students to break down problems, identify patterns, develop algorithms, and think like computer scientists, even without coding.

Hour of Code is less than one week away!

Hour of Code is back, and we're on a mission to make students' invisible dreams visible through computer science. Register your Hour of Code event now for a chance to win $500* worth of DonorsChoose credits to support your classroom with resources for future learning.

Join the largest learning event in history, December 9-15, 2024

This year's theme, "Make The Invisible Visible," is about those thrilling moments when students make real-world connections between computer science, the things they love-whether it's music, sports, fashion, or games - and their unrealized potential.

    What's new?
There are over 100 Hour of Code activities available this year-many of which introduce AI concepts-and these standout activities promise to bring joy and surprises to any classroom.

    • Music Lab: Jam Session - Make music and learn to code with Music Lab: Jam Session! In this self-guided, one-hour activity, students remix tracks from artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Lady Gaga, and Shakira while mastering coding basics such as sequencing, functions, and exploring AI-driven beat creation.
    • Minecraft: The Show Must Go On - The big show is in chaos-the Agent has vanished! Use problem-solving and computational thinking to code through fun challenges, unlock surprises, and bring the show to life. Compose a song, choreograph a dance, craft a costume and save the show-all while learning key coding skills in blocks or Python.
