  • 1.  Back to school coming soon for some of us, what do your 1st 2 weeks look like?

    Posted 07-18-2023 16:53

    Hey Everyone,

I hope you are enjoying your summer and relaxing. For many of us in CA, we go back mid-August. I think my 1st day is August 10th, and the 16th is the first day with students. I'm very curious how you all start your years. The last 2 years, the 2 since virtual learning for my district, these 1st 2 weeks have been a wild ride. Student schedules nowhere near ready, lots of changes every day, hard to really get started on anything, and never quite sure when it's safe to get going. On top of that, my school has tried to have all teachers engage in very similar back to school activities that focus on SEL for the 1st 3-4 days so we're just having a welcoming start to the year with no curriculum or classroom expectations. WHEWS!

I have not loved what I've done the last couple of years and I am looking for inspiration and ideas from all of you.

I'll probably do some kind of scavenger hunt in my lab to focus attention on certain areas.

I'll probably do some kind of get to know you name game/interview activity.

I'd love to try the Bartle's Player Types stuff I see but I'm not sure what you do and how you launch it.

While we do spend a lot of time on the computers during the year, I want to limit the time on computers these 1st 2 weeks and do other things. I use many group problem solving activities from EMC2, Michael Matera of well played.

Each year I push hard the idea that we are developing our independent, creative, problem solving skills, so even if you don't go into Game Dev or Tech, you still leave with skills that can apply anywhere. That said, I'm always open to other ideas that can develop creative problem solving, independent learning, student led discussions. These last 2 years have been really challenging to get kids really participating like they used to. It also doesn't help that my class sizes have ballooned. Last year my largest class was 37, and we were warned, due to cutbacks, our class sizes will likely grow this year.

I'm excited for all the stuff I'm going to try, but curious to see how others launch their years.

I'm actually thinking to changing up my intro classes first week or so.

I have the same program where my class sizes are crazy (35+) students.

I am thinking about stretching out my intro unit with a few days of directed play. Basically setting up some tabletop games and randomly assigning them to some groups, at least for a few days just to kinda expose them to more tabletop games.

I think I stole this from someone else in the group and right now thinking about the games I want to use.

I'm thinking uno, coup, exploding kittens, Jenga, munchkin.

Kinda seeing what niches and mechanical concepts I want them to see.

My students return this coming Monday, August 14th. Usually I hit the ground running and jump into content the first week, but this year will be different. The district CTE office has given us some 15-20 minute tasks each day the first two weeks to ease students into CTE as a whole. Additionally, my school site has myriad activities it expects us to do the first two weeks that focus on SEL and PBIS (Social Emotional Learning and Positive Behavior Intervention Systems). It will be a good experience for the students, but it has thrown a wrench into my schedule, especially for the 3rd year class, but it'll be fine in the long run.
