    Hey guys!

This is the last week of the year for me. Hope all is going well to those of you who have already started the summer/those in the last lap.

I will be checking in intermittently over the summer as football starts to ramp up and consumes the little time I have.

    Get some rest!

I had a family emergency and had to take last week off theu today, to travel to help my in-laws in Mexico. I had to dismiss my final which is fine and I'm actually heading back to SF right now. I'll be at work tomorrow to attend graduation, I teach over 70 seniors among all my students.

I assigned a reflection essay since we didn't have that last week to finish up our games. Some students were disappointed bc they were so close to something they were really proud of. The reflections were amazing though. I tried to set it up as we are not going to finish so let's not worry about that part, let's reflect on what our teams did well and where we needed work. Without the fear that not finishing would tank their grades, they really dove deep. I also asked that they list 3 things they learned entirely on their own during the team game work time that they needed to learn to make their games. They listed so many things and gave examples and screenshots. I really think some version of this is going to be my final, after they make a game with a team.

What a great reflection idea. I may do this tomorrow with my class. :)

June 9 is my last day this year! I'm headed to Europe (7 countries this summer).

As always I spend a lot of time in reflection of my program it's effectiveness. This year though I have found new purpose, and really feeling like I am doing exactly what needs to be done. This year I attended a session on "imposter syndrome" at GDC2023, and having met with and started this virtual community with Wes and Brian I am feeling especially confident. I am counting my successes this year more so than in previous years and my finals focus more on the learning process and successes than I feel students were capable of doing in previous years.

Owen thank you for sharing your thoughts on your process as well, We are always needing a chance for that reflection, so glad your kids had a true chance to examine what they learned this year. Kudos for that beautiful nugget.

    Happy Summer Y'all

Oh yeah, I wanted to go to that chat at GDC. Was it good? It took so much to get all my students on public transportation down to GDC, then do all the consent forms etc that we missed some of the early talks, and then we started in the expo hall, and then all bets were off. I didn't make it to any of the talks that Friday.

That session was the one I got the MOST out of. The line to get in was very long, and the room was packed, there were more people that wanted in but there was no room.

The session started with "Who feels like they don't belong?" and absolutely every hand went up.

So validating, so satisfying, I never felt more like I belonged than with a whole bunch of people who didn't feel that way at all. This is exactly how I want my students to feel...Like they belong, not that they have to be good at game design, just know that they belong if they just want to try.

I recently watched a video about successful creators (musicians, artists, etc.) the one factor that made them so good was the hours they put into their craft. And being good at something typically meant an average of 10,000 hours.

Knowing both of these solidifies with me that I am just now getting to the good stuff, and newbies will need to work at this a while to feel like this is something they could be good at. Practice and time.

    See photos from session.
