Hypothetically, If there was a Game Dev Teaching Conference specifically for k12, what would YOU want out of it?

Pedagogy suggestions. Teaching ideas.  Make contacts with like minded teachers.  Right now I am messing around with Unreal Editor for Fortnite as a possible direction for my game dev course.  I would like to meet teachers or whomever that have used it and discuss learning results.  Things like that.  Face-to-face is so much more interesting.

    1. Usable best practices (overall management of projects, classroom, large scope)
    2. Roundtable where people discuss best practices, biggest mistakes, growth in teaching Game Design over years
    3. Specific lesson/unit plans in digital format and how to implement them
    4. Networking with other teachers - every person registered selects to share their contact info or not and it is easily accessible on some website or app
    5. Social mixer during the conference day with good free food to attract all attendees and everyone is wearing clear badges maybe colored (blue is high school, green is middle school, yellow outline is programming focus, black outline is art focused etc)
    6. A website hub that hosts all of these things to refer back to 6 months later - videos of talks, links to shared resources, list of attendees with contact info (can be a website we need to log into to protect contact info)
    7. Some sort of start to an organized Game Jam. Maybe starting right after the conference our classes all run a Game Jam based on some theme chosen at the conference. Some time frame (1-2 weeks?) then we all share the games in one place and give and receive feedback. Even some kind of voting system just for fun.

Off the top of my head that is usually what I am looking for ...

I nominate Brandon for conference organizer. All of these are great ideas. I also like the different colored name badges. I hope this comes to fruition. Brian didn't you say that 43 states have a Game Design pathway? I think you could really be on to something.

Hopefully GDC organizing committee sees it that way.

I have been lobbying them pretty hard for a while now. There is the Games Education Summit, which is great, but it is post-secondary focused. Hopefully we can get some movement on that.

Game Jam for teachers or for students?

I definitely meant game jam for teachers, but I wonder if we could pull of a game jam for students but among our students?

I think that is pretty doable. We would need to set it up a little a head of time but that could be a fun end of semester thing.

I would want to have skill training for very specific tasks related to Game Design.

We work a lot with prototypes of testing mechanics and using primitives.

I would like good info on developing the wrapping for a game so to speak.  Developing UI overlays, better game menus or loading screen menus, and the business side of details related to getting games onto platforms.

    Again, working in hypotheticals.

Would you prefer someone from Unity/Unreal/Godot whatever doing it or a high school teacher? Would you even care?

Both the company rep and the experienced teacher have strong but different expertise.  The Unity/Unreal/Godot person knows their product and the resources available but often has no idea of the reality of teaching.  An experienced teacher may use a methodology that does not suit other teachers.

I'd love a more game design teacher focused conference. I am going to the AME Conference this summer in Burbank. It's my 3rd one, I've done the pop ups they have bc they are in the Bay Area, and they do have some stuff for game design, but so far it's only been Unreal oriented. It's not about game design but how to use Unreal and Fortnite Creative. I've been to CSTA Conferences too and there's not much that applies. I'd love it if GDC offered something. I know GDC is back in SF again next year, as it has been always, but there are rumors that it might move elsewhere that is cheaper. I'm also wondering if it's passed it's prime and like E3, could it just disappear?

I make everything up. I don't know any local teachers who teach game design. Some days things go smoothly, some days I have awful imposter syndrome. I've never built a game except for game jam type prototypes.

That's something I'd love to do with some folks this summer, maybe make a game together somehow, or do a game jam together.

GDC is definitely in San Francisco for at least one more year, after that I am not nearly connected enough to know, assuming they know.

I have been lobbying pretty hard for a while now to get a k12 anything on the program, I am a little hopeful that I might have found a path into GDC proper. I will follow up with them later.

If not, I wouldn't be against tapping into some other relationships to doing either:

    •  a breakaway summit somewhere around GDC. Basically just need space. I brought it up to some people at Unity one time and they didn't shoot it down immediately. We really just need a space to do it.
    • Some sort of event somewhere else. I would love to get the programs in my region together to talk shop, maybe show off student work, but I am not expecting people to fly out just for that.

Also have you reached out to SFCOE? I would be stunned if you were the only Game Dev teacher in San Francisco.

SFUSD is a county office and school district. There is one other game design teacher in SFUSD but he does his own thing. He might be interested in a game jam. Some other computer science teachers have a game unit but it's pretty basic.

I would love to see a conference for High School Game Design but anything that can really allow us to collaborate is a huge win!

    I am all for:

    • sharing of curriculum and ideas (Share one/get one)
    • side-by-side lineup of how to approach game design with the different engines and how to approach assignments from different angles with the different engines
      • I see this is as giant spreadsheet (example: whole wall of game mechanics and resources for different engines to approach learning and teaching)
    • sharing best practices/lessons learned/winning moments (celebrations)
    • Networking (Love the color coding Brendon)
    • sharing connections/contacts (this is my contact at _____ he/she is open to talking about____)
    • discussions of equipment being used (great for new programs to ensure they have what they need, and to discuss options for expanding programs)
    • discussion of struggles (school specific, district specific, in general) and how to deal with those nay-sayers
    • dreams for the future of the program- are your dreams within scope/reasonable? How do you make this happen? Who can help?
    • share student success (game art, etc.)

P.S. Brian you are awesome--thanks for keeping this going!
