In observance of Valentine's day, I think this is a good time to spread the love and brag on your students work a bit.

My capstone course is starting to spin up their culminating projects, which they will work on in teams basically for the rest of the school year to show off at the a game show in Sacramento, the Capital Creative Showcase and a a district event later in the May. I very intentionally tell my students from day 1 that I will let you try a bad idea, because I may be wrong.

One of my groups, from the first day of the capstone said they want to make a 3D factory automation game. A project which I was not sure they would be able to do within the scope of the class. So far they have gotten significantly farther than I would ever have guessed and over the course of a week have a greybox prototype of their core gameplay loop running in unity with the first passes of some of their custom assets. It is insane to me what they have accomplished in roughly two weeks of iteration.

My Intro Unity kids are making a platformer game.  They had to write up a game design document, draw up some concept art and make at least one character with all the needed animations using Aseprite.  For others they can use sprites sheets from the internet.  I gave them this tutorial as a foundation for a 2D platformer game.   https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4j7SP4-hFDJXHQUqF6HGzbyCQrLf-wWV  Several of the kids (9 total) have no experience with Unity.  They are finishing their character sprites right now.  What they can do on their own is incredible.  I basically sit and watch and help if there is an issue.

This is my first year teaching Game Design.  We did Create with Code first semester, and now in the second, kids are working on their own game projects.   I am so amazed and impressed with my kids and their creativity.  One of my students really likes coding and design and he's creating a very fun looking game and has spent countless hours outside of class researching and even building at home.  It's fun to watch his excitement.  Another student is creating a very unique style of game and I'm happy that he has an outlet for his creativity.  He doesn't talk to anyone at school much, but I can tell he likes being creative and will talk if you ask about his game.

My students are competing in SkillsUSA for the first time this year and I had teams of students from my advanced class submit video game projects. One of my teams came in 1st in the regional conference yesterday (all of SoCal minus LA which is its own region). That team and another that qualified will both be moving on to state the first weekend of April. Super hyped my students did so well.
