CSTA Chapter Leaders Transition to Higher Logic FAQ

    What is happening?

CSTA is eliminating MemberNova and moving chapter management into Higher Logic. Many Chapter Leaders have expressed strong concerns about MemberNova. We took this feedback into consideration and have worked hard to find a new solution that will better serve your needs.

CSTA's target go live date for the new AMS is no later than Friday, February 28, 2025.

We know that change is hard, but we truly believe that this will make everyone's lives easier and will help you better serve your members. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to @Jason W. Bohrer, your Regional Support Coordinator, or @Michelle Burton. You can also submit questions you would like us to address during the Mid-Year Chapter Leadership Summit via this threaded discussion (just hit "Reply" above).

How will the new system be better?

Some of the challenges Chapter Leaders have shared that they have with MemberNova include:

    • Emailing Members. The system is clunky and confusing to navigate. The new system will have a simple email system that is easy to navigate and will all you to communicate with both chapter members and individuals with CSTA accounts who are interested in your chapter.

    • Creating Events. Creating an event in MemberNova is confusing and complicated. The new system is simple to navigate and events will automatically populate on both your chapter and CSTA's website. CSTA will also create an event template for you to clone to make the process as simple as possible.

    • Working with the Website. It is very time consuming to create and customize pages. The new system will have a simpler way for Chapter Leaders to utilize templates from CSTA while still customizing to your needs. You will not need to be an expert in web design to create a functioning website for your chapter.

There are also a few new features that are beneficial to your chapter in the new system:

    • PD Passport. The new system will allow members to receive professional development credits for attending your chapter meetings if they have registered for the chapter meeting in advance.

    • Mentor Matching. Members will be able to enroll as a mentor, a mentee, or both, and chapters will be able to assist in pairing teachers with each other to further connect and support.

    • Integrated Systems. You will no longer have to log into multiple systems to manage your chapter. Everything will now live in HigherLogic – your chapter membership list, creating events, communicating with your members, and managing your virtual community. This will streamline your communication and make it easier for members to engage with your chapter.

Why should I put my Chapter Events on the CSTA website?

If your chapter events are on the website, then CSTA will be able to give Professional Development Credits for attendance at the events.

How will I record attendance at my chapter meetings?

There will be a way for Chapter Leaders to share a list of participants at meetings and events.  This will allow CSTA to award professional development credits for meetings.

When do I need to have my new website updated?

We are asking that all chapters update their website no later than Feb. 28, 2025. We will have plenty of working time at the Mid-Year Chapter Leadership Summit for your Chapter Leadership Team to work on your new sites together.

When will I lose access to the current system?

You will lose access to MemberNova on March 31, 2025. We encourage you to start planning your migration after the Chapter Leadership Summit.

How will my chapter members learn about this change?

CSTA will begin communicating the transition to the new system to all members the week of February 10, 2025. At the Mid-Year Chapter Leadership Summit, we will provide your chapter with a toolkit to communicate with your members.

Will my chapter still have the same domain?

Yes! Your domain will move to the new website when we go live on February 28, 2025.

What happens if I don't migrate my chapter to the new system?

CSTA will create a basic, generic website for all chapters to customize and build out for their specific needs. If you do not customize your website, it will be a generic CSTA chapter website. CSTA will lose access to the current system in the spring of 2025. Once that access ends, you will only be able to manage your chapter through HigherLogic.

What is happening at the Mid-Year CLS?

We will have staff from both CSTA and HigherLogic to provide in-depth training on the system and will have plenty of working time for you to get a head start on building out your new chapter website.

If there are specific topics or questions you would like us to address during the MYCLS, please submit them here as a threaded discussion post.

I noticed that it says above that participants must register in advance to get PD credit.  Will there be a way to add people that did not sign up in advance to get PD credit?

Hi Eric, yes there will be a way to add attendees who did not register in advance to the event. However, the event will need to be on the calendar in order for us to do that. We'll share more information about the event process as we get closer to launch. Thank you!

    • PD PassportThe new system will allow members to receive professional development credits for attending your chapter meetings if they have registered for the chapter meeting in advance.

Which states recognize the "professional development credits" issued by PD Passport?

    Hi,

How do we access the Higher Logic website and log in? I see that we need to make sure we can do that before the leadership summit tomorrow, but I have not received a link or login information.

    Thanks!

I'm wondering the same thing. I tried using the CSTA Google email login info, but that did not work.

I selected sign in on the link Jason posted and entered my email.  Then I got a code in my email and when I entered that code it let me in.  Not intuitive at all.  Basically you have to sign in.

    Hope this helps!

I'm a little confused about how to exist as a member of multiple chapters. I should be a CSTA+ member of CSTA Far North, and a regular member of CSTA Golden Gate and Silicon Valley...but I don't exist as as an icon in the actual community. I'm also still listed as a Chapter Leader for CSTA Golden Gate, but should be a Chapter Leader for CSTA Far North. Not sure what Admin activities I need to undertake to make the transition.

I am also confused about this issue. Will we have the ability as members to be part of more than one chapter?

CSTA Washington has used MemberNova quite a bit over the past few years.   The original little unclear whether the transition will keep all of existing customization to our website, stories, bulletins, and events.   Will all the URLS that we created remain the same?   Will anything fail to be migrated.  Are there any customizations or content changes that we made in MemberNova that will need to be redone in Higher Logic?   Am assuming that this will be good, but would like confirmation.

The current virtual community for our chapter is still named "CSTA Puget Sound" despite the recent consolidation  of the four Washington CSTA chapters into "CSTA Washington".   Can we get a rename for this virtual community without changing all of the URLS to the posts?   Also we created another virtual community - WACSTA" to handle communication between the four Washington chapters.  WIth the merger of the four Washington CSTA chapters into CSTA Washington, this community can be eliminated with the move to Higher Logic.

For those from Washington who are viewing this thread, note that any clock hours granted through Higher Logic cannot be used for Washington state clock hours without considerable work from our chapter to document and approve these clock hours.   Many of them will not count for Washington.   Please see me for more info.

I am entirely serious about quitting CSTA and resigning from all of its chapters if there is not a good migration story from MemberNova to Higher Logic.   Providing an adequate migration story is Rule 1 of migrating from one system to another.   If we're essentially throwing away all of the work that chapters have done over the past four years on MemberNova, why should we trust that any work that we do on HigherLogic four years from now when we change our minds again.   Not providing an adequate migration story invalidates all the work I've done in MemberNova over the past few years so I'd have no regrets about leaving.

You mentioned "how to" handouts/videos on Higher Logic at the leadership summit, but I haven't seen any.  Did I miss it? I have been making some updates to our Higher Logic site but am not sure that I am working efficiently. The deadline is coming up and I have a crazy couple of weeks at work last week of February/first week of March. I was hoping to get the updates done this week.
