Cultural Competence in Computing (3C) Fellows

APPLICATIONS FOR COHORT 4 ARE ACCEPTED FROM OCTOBER 10, 2022 - MARCH 31, 2023! Please review the FAQ, and submit applications here.

Undergraduate computing departments have long suffered from issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). However, there has been, to date, no large-scale effort that focuses on addressing issues of systemic racism and bias that directly impact not only students from minoritized groups, but also faculty (as issues of race, gender, and intersectionality impact hiring, promotion, and tenure decisions).

The Cultural Competence in Computing (3C) Fellows Program is a cohort-based professional development program that helps computing faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and professionals: 1)learn more about social science topics (such as identity, intersectionality, racism, bias, and discrimination) and how these topics impact computing environments (as well as the developed technologies); and 2)develop computing deliverables at their home institutions that leverage these topics to foster more inclusive and equitable cultures.

The Fellows FAQ answers frequently asked questions about the program and participation.

I was part of the first cohort and the training was phenomenal. You should apply if you are able. Dr. Washington and her team put together a rich and engaging program.

The 3Cs program came at a time in my life where I struggled with processing a ton of social chaos. I was yearning for tools to help me digest everything. Some of the books in the prep packet were I exactly what I needed. Though the prework was a hefty amount of material, the resources were well-curated. I suggest pacing oneself as soon as one gets the packet and when there's an option, try audiobooks.
Dr. Nicki Washington, Dr. Shani Daily, and team crafted sessions with superb guest speakers and even (fire!) music playlists. Those sessions provided opportunity to process with folks--and that led to developing solid relationships with my group. If you're seeking to dig deep into exploring equity and inclusion in CS education, apply for this program--it's truly transformative! I'll never be the same!

I participated in the 3Cs Fellows program last year. The prep packet was a lot of work but was excellent content. Many books were already on my list to read, and it was great to have the structure and encouragement to actually get through them. And, the guest speakers during the session were top notch. I really appreciated participating together with some colleagues so that we could discuss some of our reflections, questions, and ideas while completing the prep packet and while planning for a project to implement. It's a significant commitment -- to complete the pre-work and attend the 10 Saturday sessions in the spring -- but it's very worthwhile. I guarantee you'll get a lot out of it!
