  • 1.  GDC Registration and updates.

Just a few heads up for the GDC crowd.

Registration is opening "soon" which I am guessing means next week. PERKINS and CTEIG can both pay for it under PD and your district is required to send you out to relevant PD as part of getting that money.

Start getting your district forms and approvals you will need to attend. I haven't seen prices for this year, but I am budgeting $5500 for hotel, registration, mileage, meals etc. Obviously if you are flying that would be an added expense.

I cannot stress enough, moving early saves you money. The passes are cheaper and more importantly, the good cheap hotels go fast.

If you have never been. It is awesome. Even if GDC does not have a thing that says k12 educators. It is invaluable. If you can only go two days, you want to do Tuesday and Wednesday. As we get closer we will organize some sort of meet up for us even if GDC doesn't help us out with that.

On that note: As I mentioned a while ago, the Educator's summit did finally acknowledge our existence again. I have no idea if that means that they are open to submissions for k12, but if you are submitting the submissions call ends tonight at midnight. I encourage anyone thinking about submitting to do so. More submissions is harder to ignore than a few.

I bring my students on the Friday since it's career themed and I live and teach in SF so it's pretty easy for me to do.

It's too expensive for me to go for more of the conference though. My district won't pay for conferences over $1500. Since it requires a sub for any other days I miss, the math doesn't math.

That said, there are many things in the community where attendees meet up and hang out. I always go to the Github Open Source party, great food and drink, and lots of cool people.

I will not be submitting anything this year because I decided to go on medical leave for the rest of the semester after my accident. I tried to start the year like normal, but after the 5th week it was clearly too much for my brain. My body was recovering nicely but my brain is taking longer. I'll try to start in January after Christmas break. As long as I am able to return in the winter, I'll bring my students to GDC again, for the 4th year in a row.

Thank you for the heads up. I'm ready to enroll when it opens. Keep us posted if you hear anything. I'm on the email list, but those hotels definitely fill up fast!

I submitted a talk on my Parsely Unit.  We'll see.  Hopefully, I'll get at least a little consideration.
