A question from @Michelle Laskowski on the CS for All Washington Slack channel (let me know if you want an invite):

Does anyone know if our CSTA conference participation/certificate will count towards OSPI's clock hours?  And if so, can you describe how to go about this? TIA, it was a great learning opportunity!

    My response:

Unfortunately, no.   To provide clock hours, PSCSTA (or another organization) would have to approve paperwork BEFOREHAND indicating who was speaking, what was taught, what standards were met, and proof of attendance.  Since every one would have a different experience, it's too difficult. What PSCSTA could do for you next year is set up a professional development plan that includes CSTA Conference or other pro-CS ed activities, that we do not provide clock hours for.

Here's a free PD course with 12 STEM clock hours from Washington Education Association using Microsoft Minecraft:

If you're curious about game-based learning, WEA is offering Minecraft in Education as an example of game-based learning for members. Class will be held July 24 and 25.

Game-based learning promotes creativity, collaboration and problem-solving in an immersive digital environment. Educators around the world use Minecraft: Education Edition to engage students across subjects and bring abstract concepts to life. Participants will learn how to play and build in Minecraft by experiencing worlds and lessons firsthand, and will learn how to determine when to have students work individually and when to work cooperatively in multiplayer mode. No Minecraft experience is needed.

Session 1 is on Monday, July 24, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Session 2 is on Monday, from 1-4 p.m.
Session 3 is on Tuesday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Session 4 is on Tuesday, from 1-4 p.m.

Participants must participate in all training sessions and can earn 12 clock hours. The course meets the STEM certificate renewal requirement.

Register for the free course online. Participants must download and install Minecraft (Education Edition) prior to the course.

Please visit the WEA website for the latest course offerings as they become available.

Questions? Contact WEA Staffer Thera Bradley.

Wish I had known about this a few weeks ago

At the August 2023 ECEP meeting, the Kapor Center shared a presentation that contained valuable information and several links to resources on culturally-responsive/sustaining CS resources: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1QNXyRdXxzOrM98pPyS8FluruMXvTZ7GiJabATfGVYWo/edit#slide=id.g23951b25441_0_395

For those of you who are not familiar with the Kapor Center, they are the thought leaders in the area of culturally-responsive/sustaining computer science education.  Their framework on this issue is very often cited: KC21004_ECS-Framework-Report_final.pdf (kaporcenter.org)
