  • 1.  Question - What Kind of Builds?

    Posted 12-20-2024 02:33 PM

    Hey all. Happy holiday break.

Quick question - what types of builds do you have your students make and where do you host them at the end of a large project?

Specifically, do any of you have putting a game on the app store as part of your class curriculum? I want to try it out this year, but I am hesitant and intimidated by what sort of process is required to make a developer account on the Google/Apple play store.

Also intimidated by all the issues that could arise from different phone sizes/dimensions/versions.

Looking forward to the challenge, but hoping someone has gone through it before.

In my past experience we have done:

WebGL builds on Unity Play for mid-project prototypes. Then final builds as WebGL builds hosted on itch.io on our school page mvhs.itch.io.

We have also done Windows builds, Mac builds, and VR APK builds hosted on mvhs.itch.io as downloadable builds.

Also, here are the midproject builds for my Game Design students. There are 7 teams and this is after a 2 week first sprint, then a 3 week second sprint in groups of 3-5. When we return from break the students will have one final 2.5 week sprint to polish their game, add sound and particle effects, fix bugs, take in user feedback and improve the quality, etc.

Usually just a windows and a webgl build for our itch.io page.

If a group does a mobile game than an Android and/or ios build.

We have them do Windows and WebGL. Our school blocks itch.io and even Unity play so I have been using GitHub pages to host their WebGL builds

We're a 2 year CTE program and we include art (Photoshop, 2d pixel art and animation and 3D modeling with blender) as well as the programming C# and Unity.  Last half of senior year is a capstone and they specialize as artists or programmers.  We've had students working on an educational app/game for a local non-profit which needed to be on their website so that's why we use WebGL.

Would love to do more with mobile and/or VR but it's been challenging getting through all the content we have as it is!
