Updating Washington CS Standards

  • 1.  Updating Washington CS Standards

Washington CS learning standards are posted at https://ospi.k12.wa.us/student-success/resources-subject-area/computer-science/computer-science-k-12-learning-standards

They are the same as the CSTA standards at https://csteachers.org/k12standards/.

The CSTA standards will be updated in a project lasting until 2026.

As the current standards are too broad and deep for the extent to which CS is currently taught in our public schools, there is a need to determine which of these standards should be required as "foundational" for graduation, regardless of what happens with SB 5849.    We need more clarity in our standards to better focus our CS education efforts in the state.    Further, CS education has changed since the CSTA standards were published in 2017 - so other changes to state standards may well be necessary as CSTA modifies  its nationwide standards,

What are your thoughts on updating Washington's CS education standards?   Are you interested in joining a working group to determine which CS standards should be required for graduation or making other changes to CS standards?   Please reply to this post with your thoughts on the current standards or if you are interested in joining a working group to discuss the standards
