Wednesday Discussion - Games

One of the interesting quirks of teaching game dev is a incentive to keep up with the changing game market to keep relevancy with students.

In that vein, what are you playing?

I am still in the playoffs for football right now, but the tiny bit of time I do get is Balatro, a little bit of Magic:Arena and some Baldur's Gate 3 every once in a while.

Once my season wraps up, I am going to start working on my game on a more regular basis and really want to take a peek at Final Fantasy 16.

    I'll jump on this late.

Had a surgery a few weeks ago, so bought the new Zelda Echoes for the switch and had a blast playing through that over a few days. It was really interesting seeing how they went back to a Majorra's Mask style in a smaller world, yet incorporated some of the best parts of BoW on a smaller scale. Really enjoyed it.

On the daily, I love the NYT daily puzzles. They've got me coming back for Connections, Wordle, and the mini crossword every morning.

Some favorites I've played over the last year:
Mobile game - Kingdom rush tower defense series
Xbox - Burnout Paradise (older game, but only got it this year)
Xbox - Guitar Hero (also older, just love it)
Switch - the new Mario Party, they sped it up and made a ton of new mini games

On the board game side I play daily at lunch with coworkers and my game list would be like 50+ long. A few recent favorites:
Quoridor (4 player maze building game, pretty quick, strategy)
Hearts (classic 4 player card game)
Skull King (another trick taking card game, blending bridge and hearts etc, 2-8 player, made by Grandpa Beck games who makes card games with custom art and decks)
Tikal (tile based, treasure hunting game)
Pandemic + Forbidden desert (co-op games that are insanely well balanced and always come down to the last move. So impressed with the design of these games)
Dominion + Star realms (fantastic deck building games somewhat similar to magic the gathering, but all enclosed in one box, with variety enough to replay over and over with different games each time)
... and too many more to list

It's really hard to meaningfully keep up with the games landscape. My STEAM library is large and I buy things on sale. I often buy things that complement what we do in class, like pixel art games when we are learning to make pixel art.

For that reason, I bought Animal Well at the beginning of the summer. After my accident I thought, I'll play a lot on my SteamDeck so I got this one. I couldn't play games for at least a month because of brain fog so I haven't made as much progress as I had hoped, but I really like it. It shows a lot of what you can do with pixel art and animation and keep a game super fun and engaging.

I recently bought Cult of the Lamb for 50% off around Halloween.Truthfully I bought it to try to better understand how some folks can keep supporting the recent President elect in spite of all the terrible things he's said/done. It gives me some solace in that area, BUT what it also does is make me think of my own classroom, and what we do or don't do as teachers with our rules and policies that get kids to buy in to our class or skip out entirely. I'm still on medical leave but I'm going to keep playing this one as it spurs me to think deeper about how to get kids to hang in there with hard content and what they need us to do in order to stay engaged.

I am not much of a co-op gamer, but I have a friend who lives in France and bought me a copy of HellDivers so we could play together. He used to live near me and moved to France about 5 years ago and I think it's a great way to stay connected, but I haven't played yet since time zones are tough.

I'm actually thinking of making a game jam type prototype for a Cult of the Lamb style game, but based on building buy in for a classroom where the teacher is the main character. I'll probably work through this idea with my seniors as they start in the Spring on their Capstone projects and do most of the things I ask them to do in my own game. At least that is the plan.

@Brian, never got into magic but played Hearthstone religiously for years. In general I enjoy TCGs, although I prefer them digitally as I don't like to accumulate stuff. BG3 is also on my list, but I promised myself I'd do one open-world game at a time, which, right now, is Fallout: New Vegas. I am also a fan of Final Fantasy though I find the games further and further down my backlog as new, amazing games keep coming out.

@Brendan I love board games as well but how in the world do you have time to play them during lunch?! My lunch is 34 minutes long, closer to 25 when you factor in how long it takes to walk to and from a communal space to eat. My department coworkers and I do have a separate gchat group to post our Connections scores every day and discuss the puzzle, though :)

@Owen I only played the demo for Cult of the Lamb but I saw it as a black humor roguelike where you play an obvious bad guy. Did not read much more into it than that but your perspective has made me think I ought to take a closer look. Maybe I will pick it up next time it's on sale.

I myself, in addition to FNV, am currently working on Shadow of Mordor, Dark Souls (my 4th playthrough), and Hollow Knight. I'm also an old-school Halo player, and have been enjoying the Halo 2 throwback stuff they've been doing this month in Halo Infinite.

Most of what I play is just taking things off of a very long backlog, however I do have to recommend Zachtronics. They (he?) are a game company that makes games about programming/learning. That description does not come close to doing them justice, though--they are way more engaging than most edutainment games. And they are hard!! I have not finished any of them to 100% completion (without a guide, of course). I try to use them for extra credit, filling in random half days/time before long breaks, etc.

I also have to recommend some games that are not about programming, but deal heavily with various topics tangential to computer science:

    • The Talos Principle is a puzzle game that I can't say much more about without spoiling, but is really philosophical and made me think more than probably any other game has.
    • Soma is a horror game exploring what exactly consciousness is.
    • Detroit: Become Human is a high-budget game about AI/androids gaining consciousness.
    • Horizon: Zero Dawn is also hard to talk about without spoiling the story, but I can say the robot dinosaurs are more important than just looking cool.
    • Lastly, I have to give a mention to Final Fantasy XII. While not really about computer science, this game does let you "program" your party members to battle for you (basically a big chain of if statements) and was really my first introduction to programming, as we did not have CS classes in my high school.

I've also heard good things about Nier: Automata, but haven't played it myself.

Cult of the Lamb is exactly as you describe it AND it has these other elements that make me think of bigger pictures. I had a follower die the other day and I kept thinking what should I have done differently, should I have paid more compliments in my interactions, did I feed them enough, did I wait too long to build their beds, etc. That has me thinking about disengaged students in my classroom and what to do to pull them in more. Do the daily interactions with my students, even my disengaged ones, make small differences that add up until one day, they are along for the ride? Maybe that will work for some but not all but how much should be done to keep pulling more kids along for the ride.

I love Hollow Knight, still kinda waiting for Silk Song, but my attention has been pulled elsewhere.

Have you tried While True Learn? It's a fun game to learn machine learning and you are a cat.

Maybe in a summer WE should have our own game jam?

I spend a fair bit of time talking about Final Fantasy XII's systems in my class, kinda clever way for dealing with where they wanted to take the series, even if it wasn't really my favorite at the time.

I tend to get really into a video game for 2-6 weeks then never play it again. In the last year or so I played Jedi Survivor, Baldur's Gate 3, Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Final Fantasy 16, Unicorn Overlord,  Cult of the Lamb, Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes, Legend of Zelda: Wisdom of Ages, Horizon Forbidden West, NCAA 25 coach mode. Currently playing Dragon Age: Veilguard on PS5 and Balatro on my phone. I picked up Arco on the Switch awhile back but have to play it still.

For years I did not have a console and would only play World of Warcraft on PC on and off. I purposefully did not upgrade from my PS2 to keep me focused on college work and similar, and only had a Wii then a Switch to play games with my kids. Since I got my PS5 in May '23 though, I have been playing new releases pretty regularly.

I'm extremely late on this but I still play a variety of stuff.  It keeps my mind clear and helps release the stressors.

Recent games that I've been working through Neva (by the creators of Gris, one of the most outstanding narrative games without voice acting).  Playing a lot of Satisfactory, it keeps me chill as I destress.  The 1.0 release has been incredible, the writing is well-written and darkly funny.

Also for other fixes, playing Dead Cells, Windblown, and Astral Ascent as roguelike action platformers.  I've also played some AfterImage which is surprisingly a decent metroidvania.

Playing board games any chance I get.  The Dead Cells board game has been outstanding.

Definitely want to play the Dead Cells board game.

Haven't played Satisfactory, but Infinifactory is one that looks similar and also has a sort of dark sense of humor/storytelling.

Also Deadlock, even though I'm bad (I'm probably above average in MMR but I get stomped regularly, so who can say?)

Other Board/Card Games: Schadenfreude, Scout, Can't Stop, Slay the Spire, and Hegemony.

Schadenfreude is a unique twist on trick-taking of trying to score points and not take points.

Scout is a master in it's class of card shedding.

Can't Stop is classic masterpiece from Sid Sackson.

Slay the Spire is a great implementation of the video game and it works well.

Dead Cells is a great implementation of the video game as well and surprisingly the combat feels fast and furious just like the game with a clever combat system.

Hegemony is a high quality, deep, strategic game about managing classes as they struggle against each other.  The State, Capitalists, Middle Class, and Working Class all push and pulling to get their way in thematically relevant game mechanics.

I will kick the tires on deadlock soon. I have been avoiding it because I have too much on my plate right now.

One other new addition I'm playing is Little Kitty, Big City. I played through Stray last year and LOVED IT. LKBC is similar to Stray in that you move as a cat through a world, but it's NOT a dystopian future and much cuter. I'm not far but when I wanted something light and easy and fun and cute, I played it.

A friend who lives in France was visiting and he's a big gamer, he got me to purchase HellDivers 2. He plays online coop and wants to play with me as his game time and time difference matches when I often play. We're going to try to find folks to play with if anyone is playing HellDivers.

It's not generally the type of game I like to play, but I also NEVER play online coop and really need to try it. I feel way out of step with my students in that I'm not playing socially almost at all so I want to see how it all works.

Yeah, I am really trying to push myself to play a bit more new stuff just to stay in the know a bit more. It's just rough between dad life and working on my game.

Yeah, life is full of THINGS so I often look for small to medium size games to play as I don't have too much time either too dive deep into big games. I know that doesn't vibe well with my recent post about HellDivers, but that is really to experience online coop since so many of my students rely on it for their social interactions and finding friends.
