Early Wednesday Topic: Numbers

What are your classes at right now?

My two intro courses are at 36 students each, which is bluntly about 11 too many.

I also have the largest graphics course I have ever had at 27.

We are on a semester block, so I have a separate slate for next spring.

Right now I have an intro course with 34, a graphics course with 31 (*Internal Screaming) and a capstone with 15 which is roughly where it usually is, I had 24 last year for my capstone.

My game design class is currently at 28 which is about normal for me.

We spent the last two classes modding tic tac toe and discussing favorite games throughout their lives and what aspects of those game the students really found as fun. What is fun?

Today students are designing some kind of tossing game given - bean bags, tennis balls, ping pong balls, plastic cups, tape, chalk and some plastic bins.

Then we rotate and playtest the games, followed by a postmortem reflection and discussion.

Then we do a similar activity designing a tabletop / card / dice game

    Cheers,
    Brendan

P.S. I think I am going back to GDC this year for the first time since covid. I'm excited.

That sounds awesome! I have always struggled with a good project idea for twitch skill games like that. It used to always end up devolving to a "beer pong-like". This year I am trying something a little crazy. We are going to build a mini-golf course around campus and host an tournament.

We need to have an organized GDC meetup this year. I will add it to the pile of things to do.

Mini-golf is an amazing idea. Does your school have construction classes that can assist?

We have a pretty robust engineering program that I am going to partner with.

A few years ago when I was teaching geometry, I started an annual project (still going, even though I'm not in the math dept anymore) where we partner with a mini golf place downtown and redesign a hole for them each year. The students are restricted to fit within the footprint of the existing hole. It's been a big success, and that just came from asking local places to loan us putters. I'd highly recommend reaching out to courses around you for some type of partnership!

My capstone class is at 11 (lots of schedule conflicts with AP courses this time, so seniors were hard to get this year). I have one 2nd year class at 18 students; would like 6-8 more. My two 1st year classes are at 25 and 26, may get a few more as classes get balanced.

My classroom got renovated over summer and is not complete, so can't do any digital stuff for about a month, which is an interesting wrinkle to the video game classes this go round.

The master schedule was a monster for us. We are a gigantic school for our area and getting bigger (2100+, projected to get to 2700 next year). I might need to hire another teacher for my pathway.

Wow, 2100 --> 2700 in one year. That is wild growth.

Master schedule is always a beast. We are around 2500 at my school and i am part of the master schedule process. It takes months here. We go through every conflict with every class in a huge matrix and it is a pain. Good luck.

Week 2 for us- Schedules are now SET (haha, we all know that's not true) Very little participation in classes (always a struggle as I get so many kids that are too good for school). Game Design 1 - 2 class periods (27 and 23 students) Game Design 2 is during 1 of these classes so toped at 5 due to seating (not happy and I did argue this issue, because I am not able to teach them and instead have to focus on the kids that are still very unsure of what they are doing and how.

I am a little cynical this year. Budget cuts and lost out on my computer purchases for the year, Class size cuts were pretty extreme and I am now only teaching 3 classes of Tech (Cybersecurity, Game Design 1&2) Bright side is I have lots of extra time- teaching Independent study half of the day. I can focus on my program more.

    On a side note:
I am also doing no digital lessons for the first few weeks.

Does anyone have a good standalone lesson they could share?

The one I did yesterday was fun.
    -90min block
-Single period lesson, focus is on making a game fun and iterating after playtesting

Let kids choose group or solo and write their group on the board and circle it (I use these to draw lines between groups to pair them up for playtesting)
Go outside and design a tossing game in about 10min (I had given them 10min at the end of last class to start thinking of ideas, so some came in ready).
Materials - ping pong balls, tennis balls, bean bags, chalk, tape, plastic bins, plastic cups
Walk around checking in with each group, asking questions to find where they will get stuck, what they are missing, give small suggestions

    15min later walk inside
Describe what we are going to do. Each group got partnered with another on the board.
Playtest one game and give feedback, then switch and playtest the other team's game.
Go outside, walk around asking them questions. Really focus on what they kids have learned through playtesting and what changes they are going to make.
Make sure kids notice they can learn from verbally getting feedback, but also from watching where players got stuck/bored/etc, where they had fun, etc

Back inside, talk, goal is your game should now be at least slightly different from the first round. What changes are you going to make? Why?
New partners (lines on the board connecting groups)
    Back outside playtest

    Repeat for 3rd playtest

Back inside with 15ish minutes left at the end of class.
Students clean up and do written reflection.
    Reflection focuses on:
    1. Original game
    2. What 3 iterations did you make and why did you make them?
    3. Overall reflection/take-aways.

It was really fun, and there are always really creative games. We just have a big blacktop area near the classroom so we aren't disturbing other classes (at the end of the building).

    Cheers,
    Brendan

My admin banned seniors from intro CTE classes, it made such a huge difference for all of us.
