Video Game Development Course

So, a recent development in Michigan is that Unity and C# we're not included in the approved state credentials. I just took over an extremely robust program and offer a Game Development course that was in the process of being developed as a Unity/C# course.

Id like to convert it to a Python/Pygame/Panda 3D course. Does know if any curriculum or materials that could work for this?

Id hate to have to develop it all my self. Even with GPT, it'll take some time.

This may sound stupid but what are "approved state credentials"?  I did not know states gave credentials.  I live in Montana and to my knowledge there are no state credentials, approved or not.

Michigan approves credentials for programs. Here is the Michigan List.https://reports.cteis.com/home/AvailableCredentials

In order to stay aligned to the State CTE Program and receive the funding for the program, my course is required to align to a certification.

This course is being aligned to the IT Specialist-Python cert and the Python Institute PCEP.

Ah ha.  I am at a private school.  No CTE, no state funds.  Probably why I do not have a clue.

How about making it a C++ class using The Unreal Engine and aligning it to the beginning C++  EPD ? There is a lot more curriculum available so you won't have to do all the heavy lifting yourself.   https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/students-and-schools   Steve Issacs is their Director of Education X @mr_issacs   He taught Game Design in New Jersey for years. He can help you get your course up and running  Tell him I send you.

Anyone used Unreal Engine for Fortnite?  I can install it but there does not seem to be a "Start here"  tutorial on how to actually use the thing.

I found some YouTubes on it.  One of the reasons I usually teach and work in Unity is I find Unreal's learning site difficult to sort out.

Generally states have a specific credential designation for Game Dev usually within Career Technical Education or CompSci.

To my knowledge we are at 43 states that either explicitly call out game dev or imply out within another set of standards.

(I did some research as part of my pitch to GDC to get more k12 specific stuff for next year)

Even if Unity and C# aren't explicitly named, there is a pretty good chance you can still use it for just about any computer science standards.

I have used the unity course "Create with Code" as my intro into Unity/Programming for a while now. It has a parallel teachers course that goes with it and is a pretty good crash course into "real-time 3D" too use the current industry/education buzzword.

Past that your curriculum is going to have a lot to do with the goals of your pathway.

I use unity at the very end of mine, so usually I am giving them a curated menu of things to do before setting them off on their culminating project.

Depending on where it falls you might point them towards something else like the new 2d toolkit or any of the tutorial series out there.

    Andrew,

I teach my game design course with Python/PyGame and find it excellent since there is no GUI that you have to learn. I have tons of templates and examples that I give as a base line to my students, so if you go this route, let me know, I am happy to share and breakdown my experience teaching Game Design with it.

I teach a CTE game Design course in NY and we use Precision Game Development exam for the credentials several of our CTE programs have shifted from NOCTI to Precision for their credentialing exams.  I didn't see any Precision exams in the MI list but thought I'd share.

This credential is focused more on the game design aspects than the technical implementation so it is game engine and language agnostic.

What would you all recommend for a HS senior to work independently who is interested in game design?  I won't be able advise the student, nor do I know GD myself.  The student is a perfectionist and is a very good programmer (or at least a very good tutorial follower).

    @Brian Bautista, would you recommend https://learn.unity.com/course/create-with-code ?

IMHO Create with code is a little tricky to learn on your own I would go with Godot  GDQuest's Learn GDScript From Zero, which is a free and open source interactive tutorial for absolute beginners to learn to program with Godot's GDScript language. It is available as a desktop application or in the browser. There are also a lot of tutorials on youtube and a very robust and helpful community.

Create with Code is (to me) the gold standard of intro to Game Development tutorials, it has a lot of support materials, a large community of people to get help from online, covers a lot of the basics and it is very slickly produced.

However, it is really starting to show it's age. It requires a fair bit of errata to get working on newer versions of Unity and a new version just launched, so I am going to guess there are some additional pain points.

For more up to date stuff, I am a big fan of Code Monkey's tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmGSEH7QcDg&ab_channel=CodeMonkey

If they are willing to spend a little money, GameDev.TV's unity courses are great and get regularly updated: https://www.gamedev.tv/products?category_ids[]=11&type_simple=Course

I often refer students to the following Website - Oregon Game Project Challenge - Resources

The website itself is geared towards an Oregon HS Game Development Showcase. The resources page has a load of resources related to 2D & 3D Game Engine options, places to learn coding skills, places to learn game design concepts (The Extra Credits Youtube channel is pretty awesome), Project Management, and Art, Sound, and Video tools for creating and using premade assets.

The site won't tell you how to create a game, but will point you to places that will teach it in various ways and through various platforms.

I used Godot all last year with my 4 Game Dev class and now this year too. All my seniors made their Capstone game projects in Godot. I love it so much more than Unity, what I used the years before the switch to Godot. I use the curriculum GDQuest is developing right now

Sorry, I meant to reply directly to you, but I posted just below. Here is a doc with the links to the trailers of the Capstone projects my students did with Godot last year. I could link you to their Github repos too, but not all the games are in a great finished state. AT least with the trailers you can see what's possible.
